My Choices/Predictions/Actualities for the 2001 Academy Awards

(3/26/01) - Not too bad, once again, if I do say so myself. I missed 3 out of 10. I was happy to see Steven Soderbergh win Best Director for Traffic over Ang Lee, and ok with Marcia Gay Harden for Best Supporting Actress for Pollock. I suppose it was the Academy's way of honoring Pollock and Ed Harris, and that was good. I was upset at the Best Original Score, it really should have gone to Gladiator, but I guess I shouldn't be too picky. Steve Martin was a great host. Very funny, and he kept things going and light. If we can't have Billy Crystal then Steve is a great second choice.

Ok, here we go again. Last year I did pretty well, this year it's really anyone's guess but here are my predictions for this year's Oscars.

Best Picture
My Choice - Gladiator
What Will Win - Gladiator
Why? - It's got the momentum, box office, and what Hollywood loves, epic movie making
***What Did Win - Gladiator***

Best Actor
My Choice - Russell Crowe
Who Will Win - Russell Crowe
Why? - Tom Hanks is the only other true contender and Cast Away isn't the movie to give him his third Oscar. Russell was overlooked for The Insider last year and, while he is good in Gladiator, it'll be something of a make up call. Plus it is widely acknowledged that his performance in Gladiator was what threw the movie into blockbuster status and he himself into megastar mode.
***Who Did Win - Russell Crowe***

Best Actress
My Choice - Joan Allen
Who Will Win - Julia Roberts
Why? - Momentum, a great performance, and she just won a SAG for Best Actress. It is deserving. In another year it would be Joan Allen. She's just been overshadowed by Julia. They are both outstanding roles and performances. It was a hard choice for me to make.
***Who Did Win - Julia Roberts***

Best Supporting Actor
My Choice - Benicio Del Toro
Who Will Win - Benicio Del Toro
Why? - Unstoppable. Just won SAG for Best Actor, so absolutely no contest.
***Who Did Win - Benicio Del Toro***

Best Supporting Actress
My Choice - Kate Hudson
Who Will Win - Kate Hudson
Why? - This was a no brainer until the SAG Awards where Judi Dench won, but Kate is still in the race.
***Who Did Win - Marcia Gay Harden***

Best Director
My Choice - (tie) Ridley Scott/Steven Soderbergh
Who Will Win - Ang Lee
Why? - This is almost a four way tie (haven't seen Billy Elliot so I can't post an opinion). But Ang Lee just got the DGA's Best Director, it makes him as close to a shoe-in as is possible. He is deserving though. They all are.
***Who Did Win - Steven Soderbergh (Traffic)***

Best Foreign Language Film
My Choice - Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Who Will Win - Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Why? - Duh.
***What Did Win - Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon**

Best Score
My Choice - Gladiator
Who Will Win - Gladiator
Why? - Have you heard it? It's an amazing score that more than deserves to win. Beautiful music.
***What Did Win - Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon**

Best Original Screenplay
My Choice - Almost Famous
Who Will Win - Almost Famous
Why? - Because it should have been nominated for Director and Best Picture, but wasn't because of Chocolat (a good picture but Almost Famous is much better). Here is where Cameron Crowe will be rewarded.
***Who Did Win - Cameron Crowe***

Best Adapted Screenplay
My Choice - (tie)Traffic/O Brother, Where Art Thou?
Who Will Win - Traffic
Why? - Fabulous film and fabulous screenplay.
***Who Did Win - Traffic***
