As you know I don't like superheros that have names finishing with Man...so I was kinda blah about watching Iron Man.

I don't know they are going to make a second one, but this one was more focused on an arrogant irresponsible guy turning into a good guy + Iron Man. So it was actually not about Iron Man - it was more about his transition and trial & errors to become Iron Man. And that's why it was good.

Downey Jr. was perfect casting for this funny + eccentric + transiting character. Peltrow was a surprise - my company was very happy to see her in good shape.

Overall, it was a very good movie. 2 hours and 6 minutes really went fast. Hope they don't make a second one with full of superhero stuff.

I did not know the history of this particular Marvel comic. I thought it was brilliantly cast - but that's from the, "Oooh yeah I can imagine these people to be super heroes" Robert Downey Jr. headlines this action flick - pretty much I had seen previews from the last year, had set expectations pretty low for this film, and wasn't going to go see it unless there was enough critical hype.

There was, and I was pleased. I'm eagerly awaiting the next installment.

It's about the details and about the RDjr. I totally dug it.

Crisp entertainment: intelligent, well-written, snappy, fun, mature, brisk, a real coup for film lovers and casual viewers alike. It doesn't attain greatness (although using "The Dark Knight" to bring it down is unfair) because its every move is perfectly predictable and the showdown climax is a disengagingly perfunctory letdown (we've seen many better clash of the titan duels lately; the fact is however that we've seen too many so maybe it would've been more interesting (albeit of course totally unacceptable to anyone else) to pit Robert Downey Jr. against Jeff Bridges instead of two giant CGI machines; Iron Man's survival doesn't make sense; and coming from a movie this sharply done you really expect more from its ending). But the rapid (largely improv'd, apparently) wit, dexterity, and outpouring enthusiasm of Robert Downey Jr. provides this superhero saga its legacy. And while Gwyneth Paltrow feels miscast (or maybe the character is just too cutesy), there's also fuckin' Jeff Bridges as the bad guy, an event not quite capitalized on to its fullest extent (again, that showdown was pretty ordinary summer movie filler), but still, it happily brings to mind Nick Nolte's turn in "Hulk", a great actor using the brio of his thespianic power, imposing physiology, priceless vocal gifts, and career reputation to mount an iconic supervillain out of very little actual script material. Not to take away from Downey Jr., who's finally reaping the universal acclaim he's deserved for the past couple decades, but he might overshadow Bridges, who should apply for more work as either a badass or an evil genius. He's got untapped strengths there

Anyway, strong movie.

You know, if it weren't for the Summer action-movie imperitive to blow up as much shit as possible, I think I could actually enjoy a movie like Iron Man. There's a couple of good performances from Robert Downey Jr. and Jeff Bridges and some funny business early on, but it doesn't quite compensate for the typical loud, boring set-pieces, the 2-dimensional characterizations, the uncomfortable meshing of fantasy & real-world, etc.

I liked this more than i thought i would, saying that its hardly an epic. Great special effects make a difference.

As always, my pro-superhero bias gives this an automatic extra point or two. It took waaay too long to get to the point where he became Iron Man. This was supposed (by me) to be an action movie, clearly different from a drama. When he finally got his iron moving, it was good, and I look forward to the next installments.

Good use of origin story. Robert Downey Jr is Iron Man. Definitely one of the best superhero movies.
