It showed very well of how clueless and powerless Americans are regarding the very uncivilized/cruel part of U.S. immigration law and procedures. It finished in a very fustruating way in that Walter (the professor) does absolutely nothing after getting so much from the people who influenced him and brightened his life...

Tom McCarthy's follow-up to The Station Agent shares the earlier film's empathy for lonely outsiders who strike up unlikely friendships. Though The Visitor could be described uncharitably as a middlebrow socially-conscious film that hits the expected notes, there's something to be said for playing those notes well, and not breaking into moviesms (or artsy-fartsyisms, for that matter). Only occasionally does it stray into stock territory, mostly it's busy carving its own niche.
