For the first half, I was thinking this was terrible, but then it grew on me. I still don't like the flashy digitizification, but the movie ended up having a little heart. It's not really a kids movie, and it gets a little too complex.

A candy-coated dreamscape of CG spectacle, as cartoonish as it is and as unexciting as the actual video game-y races themselves are, goes a long way towards forgiving the dorkier shortcomings of this somewhat surrealist would-be summer megahit. The humor is aimed at 3-year-olds, the characters are such knowingly archetypal cyphers that all the actors seem to be performing their lines with perpetual air-quotes, and there's nothing more to the story that you wouldn't just casually assume during the 4 seconds you spent thinking about it when the trailer first appeared. It's all so transparent and pointless that if we weren't seeing the movie on screen with our own eyes, it would be impossible to believe it even exists. But the Wachowski Bros. flood the screen (and our senses) with style, conjuring a fantasia of visuals, complex sound, lighting, color explosions, and dizzying editing pastiches. It's enough to almost get you involved in the story itself, regardless of how incredibly slight it is underneath. The directors try mightily to entertain, to copiously distract us from the fatal banality of the "Speed Racer" mythos, and while I'm divorced enough from the moment to more clearly recognize this movie's curious failure, sit me down to watch it again and I might just say it's kinda good. Weird. But not the all-around disaster most claimed it was. Just a tuft of cotton candy laced with LSD
