I enjoyed myself, to my own surprise. Strong music sequences, skillfully edited amongst dozens of miniature storylines, good performances by a lot of unfamiliar young faces and nicely modulated ones by some TV veterans (Kelsey Grammer, Charles S. Dutton, Megan Mullaly, Bebe Neuwirth), and especially in the first act, a genuinely intriguing look at the various techniques used by the Academy to inspire and guide the budding performers. A lot of the backstage/at-home drama is soggy cliche, but the movie has enough momentum and density to not let its weaker bits get in the way.
Also, for what it's worth I gotta give this remake credit for making sense - our culture has far passed the saturation point in its obsession with celebrity and everyone collecting their 15 minutes of fame and with the hordes of shows about proving talent or otherwise being thrust into the spotlight, not to mention YouTube and Twitter and all that crap, the gap between the famous and the ordinary has probably never been smaller, so what better moment in time to remember the 1980 classic? Props for timeliness.
Now we'll see how I feel about it after going back and watching the original...
