Like Wes Anderson's twin brother, and nearly as effective. When I originally saw this a couple years ago I didn't know who Richard Ayaode was. Since then I've caught up with "The IT Crowd" and his breakout here in America, and it makes clearer the over-flow of style and show-off tactics in this movie. Actors-turned-first-time-directors seem to do that a lot (see also Clooney's "Confessions of a Dangerous Midn", etc.). But it works in this - the stone-faced deadpan comedy is a bullseye, the narration provides sharp portraits of all the characters, the art project editing mannerisms and twee decorum and playful sequencing land on the charming side of precious excess. I don't imagine Ayaode has an auteurist career ahead of him, but this is a special accomplishment worth revisiting for its multitude of pleasures.
