An utter curiosity, often meandering, often wondrously intoxicating. I don't know that it's necessarily my _favorite_ Von Trier film, as Jeff surmises, but I do know that even when I tuned out of the plot, there was always another gloriously evocative shot around the corner to suck me back in. I recently gave "Days of Heaven" a middling grade and a review expressing more or less the same sentiments, but Malick's film didn't have any performances as strong as Von Trier's does, and when "Melancholia" draws you in, it's wholly arresting.

Like most Von Trier films, I was mesmerized from start to finish, although to me, the irony of Dunst's depression immunizing her to the coming apocalypse felt under-developed. As is often the case with Von Trier, his characters felt too impenetrable and vaguely sketched to believe as real participants in the film's events. Or maybe I'm just overlooking subtle storytelling because I'm stupid.
Doesn't matter that much, because it's still a hypnotic, often heart-stopping experience of elegant technical artistry, arresting mood, and exploratory thematic content. In another tradition of this particular filmmaker, the extreme formalism blends effectively with the handheld camera-work and nuanced, even trivialized human behavior. The Altman-esque Dogme style intrigues within the lush world of the castle wedding party and against the operatic sweep of the film's prologue. Plus I'm fascinated by end-of-the-world tales, so it just delights me that now we got the Von Trier spin on it.
And since you guys were doing it, I'll join in and say this is my 2nd favorite movie of his after "Dogville" (I still haven't seen some of his earlier work, however)
