As a longtime Conan fan, this doc about his post-"Tonight Show" comedy tour was fun to watch, a mostly comical behind-the-scenes slice of life about he and his traveling team, with chunks of his shows edited in. The revelatory selling points here, since otherwise it's a fairly light-hearted riffing session, are Conan's candid expressions of anger and bristling irritation related to the NBC fiasco and the daily grind of his career. Which is weird because he comes off as so eager to please, burning the candle at both ends and genuinely invested in making his mark as a quality talk show host, yet here he reveals an undercurrent of hatred for his fans, a cynical exhaustion over his work-load, and an understandable yet still endless penchant for whining about his mistreatment at NBC. Because his comic style often relies on acting like a jerk for laughs, this behavior could just be extensions of that zone he gets into, but it makes you wonder not just how he really feels about his life in showbiz (I mean, nobody's forcing him to have a talk show, or go touring after he gets fired, so you assume it's because he just loves performing, but then he acts all cranky about it..) but how authentic his on-stage affability is. He's a funny guy with a distinct personality, and as an underdog you want to believe that he's really the smart-ass goofball he seems to be on TV, but now I can't help suspect otherwise...oh well, this modestly-received film about him is at least intriguing for offering occasional ambiguity about his persona.
