Disappointingly uninvolving, I'd say. The animation is top drawer, that chase scene is so well-choreographed that it begs the question why animated films don't use their freedom of vision to more ambitious effect more often (seriously, they almost never do), and the spirit of the film is more closely aligned to and reminiscent of "Indiana Jones" and old-time adventures than any other movie since the original trilogy was made....
...but there's nothing to invest in the characters or the adventures themselves. Everyone blandly occupies his role in the story, and the variety of settings and dilemmas feel leftover from other movies. Plus it just jumps right in to the mystery of the central plot from the get-go, and remains solely focused on propelling its plot from start to finish, rather than ever adding much fun (the wackiness of Haddock's alcoholism and the Frost/Pegg bumbling cops are pretty flat) or emotion (beyond a cursory redemption angle for Haddock). I kept wanting to immerse myself in the movie - I'm a strong believer in the genius of Spielberg - but I just never cared enough. The alchemy that made "Indiana Jones" and "Jaws" and "ET" and even "Jurassic Park" such timeless cinematic treasures is totally absent here. This is a technical accomplishment, period. Hopefully Peter Jackson's sequel recognizes this flaw and tries to repair it

I agree with the critics who described this as a study in motion. Animation should be used to depict things live action cannot, and motion-capture is used well here to combine with the fantastic as Spielberg films a chase scene that's up there with his best (and that's saying something). Characters are cartoonish as well though, which keeps the movie from being much more than an entertaining diversion.
