A clever, winning novelty, but terribly thin on story. It's just a light-hearted "Star is Born" retread; the fun is all in the gimmick itself, nothing transcendant thereof (despite a few meta jokes). Nevertheless it's a unique trick - you still see black-and-white films every once in a while, but besides a couple Guy Maddin experiments and that '70s Mel Brooks parody, there have been no truly silent films at all since they faded away nearly a century ago, and I don't imagine more than a couple will ever be made again - and it's a splendidly nostalgic experience, with impeccably chosen leads, a scene-stealing dog to rival Asta, and, much like other 2011 Oscar front-runner "Hugo" (only with much less else on its thematic plate than that movie), a charming, immersive love letter to the early days of cinema.
I would've been happier with more tap dancing, though

I was on board with the film as innocuously entertaining up until the disastrous choice to lift the Vertigo score for the climax, which was extremely off-putting and ultimately brought the film down to a mixed rating.
