"It doesn't matter what people think. You know what you did."

That matter-of-fact statement made at the end of this film drove home its powerful message about personal integrity, and who better to deliver it than rock-solid good guy Tom Hanks backed by Champion of the Human Spirit Steven Spielberg? This is a movie that had to be made together by both of these men. They have long been our most trusted cinematic ambassadors of doing the right thing, and their combined sense of ethical perseverance radiates stirringly through this already absorbing political thriller. It's a movie that confidently declines capitulation to the sensationalism with which even more major films than ever are currently beholden. No fireworks or histrionics or anything all that exciting, just a fascinating story superbly told by all involved (Matt Charman and the Coen Bros.'s writing, Spielberg's directing, Kaminski's cinematography, Thomas Newman's score, Michael Kahn's editing, and each individual performance, with special shout-out to Mark Rylance, outstandingly subtle). It's one of those movies that makes every line and gesture count. On the Spielberg spectrum, it's very much of a kind with "Munich" and "Lincoln", while far more valuable than other recent efforts like "War Horse", "The Adventures of Tin-Tin", and "Crystal Skull" (no offense to Indy 4, still a fun movie, but that's another argument)
