Another holiday, another wickedly fun capturing of its essence by Michael Dougherty. He's done it again. What's next, Thanksgiving? The summer solstice? I'm down for whatever. This guy knows what he's doing and can really deliver. This may not be as chilling as the OG "Black Christmas" but it's easily the most entertaining and lavishly presented Christmas horror movie ever made (as of 2015). Indeed, beyond the macabre tone that teeters between cynicism and reverence for the yuletide season, the mood-heightening slow burn by which the terrors are unleashed upon the protagonists, the pitiless narrative, the nasty well-timed laughs, and the committed ensemble (including a good breakout performance by young Emjay Anthony), what stands out the most about this movie is how great it looks. It's jam-packed with thick wintery atmosphere and dense Christmastime trimmings. How well a movie evokes its setting goes a long way, and on the front alone, "Krampus" is worth 5 whole stars.

The climax rushes things along too much, on the other hand, and culminates in the revelation of Krampus himself, whose design is pretty rad from afar, but up close, his actual face is surprisingly silly for the choice they made. It's kinda weird that after all the effort made to dress this movie to the nines, it looks like they grabbed its centerpiece special effect from the bargain bin. Ah well. Pumpkinface from "Trick 'r Treat" was wackily anticlimactic too. Maybe it's a deliberate choice to undercut the scary build-up with cute artificiality? Doesn't matter, still an exceptional romp
