Miniature footnotes are all I'm equipped to offer here. Pretty great movie, haunting final act. With "The Wolf of Wall Street", "Silence" and now this elegiac reunion epic treatise on mortality and regret, Scorsese remains as ambitious as he's ever been, which is rare to see from a filmmaker in his late 70's. This guy's a legend like a dozen times over at this point.

My only complaints: the visual style felt a bit plain (going for somber, I suppose, but landed on drab) and the choice of needle drops seemed too derivative of "Mean Streets", "Goodfellas" and "Casino". Not to say the songs weren’t premium cuts (“In the Still of the Night” is one of my personal all-time favorites), but deploying them when he did (also as often as he did) and using mostly oldies just came off as a crutch he's relied on too often by now.

MVP is Joe Pesci. A mastery of restraint and deliberateness. He's formidable and fascinating and I don't think he ever even raised his voice (an especially noteworthy feat considering it's Joe Pesci).

Good to see Ray Romano continue his late-career transition to better projects that recognize his depth (see also "The Big Sick", "Paddleton", "Men of a Certain Age"). He wasted himself too long in dumb comedies.

The title "I Heard You Paint Houses" is flashed twice on screen at opening and close. Unless I'm misremembering, "The Irishman" never is. ?

I don't think it's accurate to say that Frank Sheeran didn't feel anything, that he was a sociopath. His abilities to compartmentalize and suppress were unnaturally strong, but necessary to his line of work, and by the time he committed his most regrettable crime, he was too far out of touch with his emotions to process them, though that phone call and his much later reference to said call make it very clear from what I could tell that he was left traumatized deep inside. Reminded me of Casey Affleck from "Manchester by the Sea".
