Surrogate pregnancy comedy told through indie romance filter and polished by an enlightened modern interpretation of what love can mean between people. Pretty sublime and understated charmer about friendship, really, succinctly packaged, humble and honest and warm. A 10-minute Zoom chat with the people involved was attached to the theater experience after the movie ended, and confirms all of writer/director Nikole Beckwith's strong instincts and wisdom as a filmmaker. Gotta keep tabs on her.

Ed Helms: is a good actor despite how much he seems to annoy people; like most former "Daily Show" correspondents, he wields both sharp reflexes and a comfort with naturalism, whenever he's not required to over-act in stoopider type comedies. He fits right into this as a nice regular guy with some neuroses and just enough, not too much of that signature Helmsian eagerness.

This will likely be remembered more for his co-star Patti Harrison, however, her first lead role in a movie, and what a revelation she is. Having seen her be the (intentionally) acutely annoying office "bitch" in shows like "Shrill" and "Search Party", you could tell she was a talented ringer but this is a star-blooming moment. Her energy is unique, a little bit sardonically withering like Audrey Plaza but able to convey more dimension in any given scene than Plaza usually does. The camera lingers on her face quite often, letting you really absorb her essence, but that cocktail of self-possession and charisma pulls you into her orbit right away like the best leading ladies. A lot of this movie is awkward pauses and silent looks and the two of them turn it into an art form. Delightful.
