Long documentary on the history of corporations. And kind of preachy. Like a Michael Moore film. Befitting that distinction, not as good as Michael Moore.

As a social studies lesson, this documentary is packed with interesting, thought provoking information, from the diagnosis of the corporation as a psychopathic "person" to the news that companies now hold patents on genes. As a movie, it's a lot of talking heads and moderately amusing stock footage. Highlight: Bambi vs. Godzilla.

As an examination of the pervasive (and often pernicious) influence corporations have on our lives, The Corporation provides the breadth and depth that stunt-driven Super Size Me lacked. Perhaps too much breadth; there are a few claims that aren't backed up as well as they should be, and not everything ties into the overall thesis.

It's also a daring film that aims to reclaim democracy from facism and nestle it in the arms of socialism. It might rankle some folks, but on the whole I found it to be more balanced than Michael Moore's brand of rabble-rousing. (Though Moore does appear prominently in the film, and half of what he says is either hypocritical or poorly researched.) Still, balance is not the film's objective --inspiration is.
