More than slightly dumb, but terribly cool and clever. The inspired bits outweigh the goofy ones by an appealing ratio, and watching Tommy Lee Jones play straight man to a flustered Will Smith was perhaps the film's biggest strength. Smith's best sci-fi picture by a long shot. His best comedy, too, come to think of it.

One of my 25 favorites of all time, Men in Black is a fantastic sci-fi/comedy which introduces us to a universe where Earth has aliens living among us. Will Smith's character is initiated into the group in charge of policing these extraterrestrial beings by Tommy Lee Jones' character. Smith has shown very early in his movie career that he has a cinema presence not easily matched. My favorite part of the movie is where Jones tells Smith, "A Person is Smart. People are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals; and you know it. 1500 years ago everbody knew that Earth was the center of the universe, 500 years ago everbody knew that the earth was flat, and 15 minutes ago you knew that people were alone on this planet. Imagine what you will know tomorrow."

Absolutely fun movie about alien invasion, told in somewhat of a comic book fashion. Tommy Lee Jones is part of a top-secret government agency (that not even local police departments are aware of) that battles the influx of alien presence in the country. Will Smith is a tough, brash, big-city cop who has a run-in with an alien. Jones and Smith meet, Smith gets some training, and the two become Men in Black. Great special effects, much laughter, lots of fun.

The stupid one liners by Will Smith and the rare poor performance from Tommy Lee Jones are just to of the reasons why I didn't like this film. The plot was just so dumb that I don't understand why this movie did so well.

As much as I dislike using terms like "cool", I would have to say that this movie is very cool. It's also very funny, and that doesn't hurt either. All of the performances in this movie were great, especially Vincent D'Onofro's performance as the Bug, which was unlike anything I've seen before. The aliens were neat looking too, and the coffee-drinking aliens were hilarious. I would highly suggest this movie (hint: it's even better when you're watching it with friends).
