Definitely the best of 1997 for me. I'm not exactly sure what did it for me considering that I didn't even want to watch it at first till I caught an interview with James Cameron prior to its screening.

Was disappointed that a love story was used as the main driving force of the film. The sinking of the ship was more like a sub-plot. However are a second viewing I have decided this is really a very good film (although slightly over-rated..then again what film lives up to hype...)

I swore I was gonna hate this film. So much hype. Soaring budget. Three hours long. Plus this loony guy at work had seen it 4 or 5 times, _by himself_. I was also one of the guys who joked, "Hey, why see Titanic when I already know how it ends? Ha!"
Well, perhaps it was because my expectations were sunk so low, or maybe it was just big-budget Hollywood storytelling at its best, but I totally fell for everything. Love, violence, top-of-the-line special effects, man vs. nature, haves vs. have-nots, America, idealism... I guess I can dig a good cliche as much as next guy, but the cliche aspect is also what holds this movie at a 9.

Worthy of so much praise. It deserved the Best Picture Oscar even with the lack luster screenplay. I enjoyed the acting and the love story (I know many didn't), but it made the tragedy that much more personal and therefore effective. The special effects were definitely groundbreaking and the attention to historical detail were amazing and unprecedented in such a big hollywood production. Beautiful to look at and memorable.

Say what you will about Titanic, you must concede its visual spectacularity. I rated it 8.5 for its sheer visual effects. I understand that the story was corny, and I understand that that song (that SONG!)... well, you know. I also understand that the film and the director were rewarded with more oscars than any film before it; and while disagreeing that it was the "Best Film of 1997," I still think it's a great film. On recent viewing, I did find a somewhat glaring flaw: Apparently, we are hearing the Titanic story from Rose's point of view, and yet there are several scenes in which Rose is nowhere to be found. (!) p.s. Click here for a good laugh.

It is a fairly good movie, but a bit long. It is best if you fast forward through the sappy romance bullshit, and get to the iceberg impact. If you do this, you get about 2 hours of pretty good movie. I like it when the ship stands on end, and the people are falling off and stuff. That's pretty cool! It's too bad that it is a true story, but a great reminder that there is nothing man can build that God cannot destroy in an instant. www.outcrybookreview.com/meat.htm

The most overblown, pathetically schmaltzy waste of money to come out of hollywood. kate winslet was tolerable but she has done better so many times. billy zane was unconvincing as the baddie (it takes more than a raised eyebrow to convey malice, bill). speaking of bills, bill paxton....i just can't think of any suitable adjectives for his role. but all the ones i can't think of are not compliments, ok? kathy bates is likeable but overacted as molly brown and not as much fun as debbie reynold's 1964 version. de caprio should have been de-capitated. i loved him in basketball diaries and baz luhrmann's romeo+juliet, but i could not take him seriously as an impoverished artist and it was all i could do not to stand up and scream "push that damned fringe out of your eyes!"
Too much money, an egomaniac directing and a story-by-numbers (poor boy meets rich girl about to marry rich thug followed by disaster that tests everyone's humanity - followed by audience throwing up) shows just how awful hollywood can be when it tries. i wanted them all to drown. sorry if i sound like sourpuss but i hated this film like i have never hated another.
The only thing worse was james cameron getting an oscar for this drivel, having the audacity to call for a minutes silence for those who drowned (after he made millions out of them) and then hooting "king of the world!"
Overated Baloney.

Unforgivably sentimental rubbish. Remarkable mainly for the unjustified (but predictable)praise it received from hollywood. The music, appealing to the lowest common denominator of middlebrow setiment, is especially insipid. The special effects and cinemtography are admittedly excellent, but nothing can save this dog of a movie.

A dire, soulless tearjerker, "Titanic" still isn't nearly as bad as all its knee-jerk, Leo-hating detractors would attest to. That said, it's still overblown, overlong, and overbearingly trite, and is performed unimpressively by all but Kate Winslet. Fortunately, the film is flawless in its visual splendor, and looks absolutely breathtaking, and there are several moments of near-suffocating suspense, so it's not a total disaster as a film-- just terribly mediocre.
