1. ALWAYS JUDGE A MOVIE BY ITS COVER
I take a movie for what it is, different genres require different expectations. EG: Army of Darkness, Godzilla 2000, Treasure of the Sierra Madre, DR. Strangelove, Princess Bride,The General, Casablanca,SW-Phantom Menace these are all Masterpieces of their Genres. Some succeed with Acting, some with effects, some with stupidity, but they all ENTERTAIN and I know what I am going to get when I watch these movies. There are so many wonderfull movies given poor reviews because the reviewer does not like or cannot relate to the intended audience. Which leads me to my second principle.
2.IGNORANCE - Negative Reviewers
I know nothing most of the time and this serves this reviewer well, so therefore I won't share my opinion on something I do not enjoy. I rarely give a movie that I dislike a review, with a few exceptions (Citizen Kane and Howard the Duck)My point is that I do not really enjoy certain types of movies (romance) or I never really have watched many films in that genre (Japanimation)so my opinion is really not needed. (unless of course if I enjoy it eg: Akira)My Point is that if you are a "Cinema Buff" and you rented Army of Darkness on "5 movies for $5 night" and watched the first 20 min. and discarded it for lack of "yuppie artsy fartsy camera angles" Don't waste my time by saying it was the stupidist movie you ever saw. It's Supposed to be!!!!
3. IGNORANCE - Positive
If AFI rated it HIGH, so will I.
We all have different criteria when rating movies but for the love of pete Watch the movie you are rating or at least know a little about it.
4. ENTERTAIN OR INFORM
These are qualities that I admire most in movies I watch,and also the reviews I read. I am a very easy going person so therefore I think I enjoy most of the movies I choose to watch. When deciding on a movie to watch I rely on advice from friends and I also take the advice of alot of reviewers on this website.EG - Dr Strangelove, was a movie that was recomended to me from this site and it became one of my favorites. Movies like your Armageddon's ,Titanics and Matrix's basically hollywood fluff serve there there purpose so therefore deserve some respect in that regard, although they are not what I call great films they should not be slammed for being hollywood fluff. A review should inform, Godzilla 2000 for example there where alot of Godzilla fans who loved the hollywood version but most hated it The Real Godzilla fans should know that The Old Godzilla is back. People should know that there is not alot of talking in the "First Talkie" it may as well be billed as the first "music Video" Tell something about the movie or the movies lore.
Challenge to fellow reviewers: We all love movies, and I think we should not dwell on the negatives of films that are not meant to be "Fine Cinema" and Don't Re-Hash from your Leonard Maltins Video Guide on "Fine Cinema" that you have not seen or most importantly that you did not enjoy. Review films in the Genres that you enjoy, share your favorite movies! Negative reviews should be informed reviews (eg myself with Citizen Kane its a great achievment, but I find it boring)
