It is disappointing, yes, but still qualifies as a worthy midnight movie. The '80s production is just right. Just too bad that the promising set-up (teens venturing to local carnival where evil's-a-brewing) gives way to such a plain offering (those are the antagonists? Really? Sigh). You want to blame Tobe Hooper directly, because instead of carnival spookiness or an original foe, what we get from the bad guys are exact copies of Leatherface and the Sawyer family, who don't belong in this kind of movie. Why not a psychotic clown, or supernatural carny overseeing a funhouse ride full of deadly traps? C'mon, 5 seconds of extra thought could have provided more rewarding payoffs
