It's strange (and sad) to see how the later the Wilder work, the cornier and bland the humor is. Where his best (and earliest) films haven't aged a bit, the bulk of his post-1966 work seems extremely dated and unfunny. Part of it seems to be Wilder attempting to adapt to the times by adding curiously mechanical profanity and amping up the slapstick/crude factor. The Front Page isn't bad by any means but it's Billy Wilder, for fuck's sake. Hildy Johnson (Jack Lemmon) is the biggest newspaperman in town and Walter Burns' (Walter Matthau) protégé. Hildy's decided to skip town and marry his sweetheart right in the middle of the biggest story of the year, the conviction and execution of a cold-blooder murderer played by Austin Pendleton. Because he's played by Austin Pendleton, though, you can assume that things are not quite what they appear to be. It's fun, as always, to watch Lemmon and Matthau at each others' throats but the humor is generally fairly lame, devolving into Benny Hill-esque setpieces and a lot of screaming. It's never painful, though... except when you consider where it came from.
