A sleeper in the horror field, this here's a properly gruesome, shamelessly crass werewolf opus with comedic undertones (the wolf man talks, or more to the point quips like Freddy Krueger) that is appropriately acted (the supporting teens are aptly horrible, the main male/female leads likably generic, and long-time intimidating character actor Richard Tyson is a one-man show), pre-occupied with sex, very okay looking for an indie picture, and almost creatively plotted (starts out making you think it's all gonna take place during one night in a cabin, but goes much farther than that). More importantly, it delivers the goods as far as horror goes. The two or three rape scenes might put people off, especially since one is played for laughs, but if you look at it more like a novelty (a werewolf raping a woman?), it's not so bad...I guess? At times the movie too closely resembles one of those depressingly "just good enough to pretend it's a real movie" sci-fi original pictures, like with the cliched introduction and use of an uncle for exposition, but the main thing that thankfully distinguishes it is Tyson. Although I haven't seen him much over the years (mostly just "Kindergarten Cop" and bit parts for the Farrelly Bros.), he's always caught my attention for his firmly screen-unfriendly visage and smoldering, Brando-esque intensity. He just can't seem to lighten up, even when he's happy. He looks scary and always mean. So this totally evil (even when he's human) part basically seems born to cast him in it, and he relishes it. Rather than get smarmy, snarky, or over-the-top, he plays it implosively, suggesting a festering rage within without ever letting it burst beyond his casually sadistic treatment of others. It may not seem on the surface like much to the viewer, but compare his style to how predictably the part would probably be played by anyone else. I hope Tyson finds more niche roles (and being a nice guy every once in a while would be good leverage, too, to ease up on his innately seeming abusive-stepdad freakiness), because when he gets them, it's a joy of unique acting to behold.
