Caro and Jeanut's early fantasy "Delicatessen" isn't quite as brilliant as 1995's "City of Lost Children," but it's still an endlessly quirky, wickedly funny treat. The unique, extravagantly exaggerated visuals recall something like a comic book springing to life, and it's true that both Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeanut hail from a background in animation. Though their later film "City of Lost Children" would garner them far more praise and 2001's "Amelie" (helmed by Jeanut) nabbed many more viewers, "Delicatessen" remains a treat for those who can appreciate strongly visual-- and sometimes quite diabolical-- humor.

Interesting Sci-Fi environment which is somewhat a cross between Gotham City and City of Lost Children. The filming and visuals are 10 times better than Alien 4.
Will Miramax press the fucking DVD already!?!?

Jeunet's first film shows the bug-eyed lensing, other loopy visual quirks, childish sense of humor, and not very keen storytelling prowess that would all later become his trademarks. Maybe he's the French Tim Burton - he can make it look pretty atmospheric and weird, with the occasionally quasi-original set piece, but there lacks an an engaging or well-rounded meat to the film. The two main characters pull off a sweet romance at first, but beyond that, it's just hollow zaniness.
