It was touching. And Alex Baldwin is so good. But the movie itself is truly a chick flick. My husband would have hated it.

Forgiving the generic title and insecure presentation (visuals are glossy in the blandest way, story never builds momentum or decides on a sure tone), this is a likable, even somewhat ambitious romantic coming-of-age tale. The dialogue is intelligent and culturally literate - perhaps too much so at times, making it feel unnatural and pretentious - even though the bottom line usually amounts to the same old rom-com conflicts and plot points. Sarah Michelle Gellar, while not all that rounded or accomplished a thespian, is an effervescent presence, the main reason I even wanted to see this, and Alec Baldwin, as her unlikely paramore (seriously it's kind of shocking at first to see them kissing), brings supple doses of his droll vitality to a part that seems clearly written for his personality. Unfortunately the moods don't always match - he's charmingly low-key, she acts like a perky teen, and the rest of the movie tries to be insufferably en vogue with its business world cliches and social event glam-chic. Also it introduces some awkward subplots, such as Gellar's fondness for her aloof father and how the older Baldwin compensates for that, as well as Baldwin's alcoholism, which serves as only a convenient narrative crutch for a wistful climax. You can see how these elements add up to the themes at hand, but they still feel off-key.
Nonetheless, looking past its many DTV-style weaknesses, this is an occasionally refreshing movie acted out by highly appealing stars. I can't really justify it; you just have to be willing to enjoy yourself. That type of movie.
