I know that movies are generally not shot chronologically and therefore it is pretty much impossible that you can physically see the actors losing hope as the movie progresses but I can't help but feel this is what happens in Just Add Water. As this supposed black comedy directed by Hart Bochner (of Die Hard fame) goes on, the talented cast seems to progressively lose hope and stop trying. What begins as a pleasantly off-kilter independent comedy soon progresses into some kind of robotic facsimile of what comedy should be, as if all the actors have been invaded by bodysnatchers and are simply doing what they're told.

Ray Tuckby (Dylan Walsh) is a prototypical indie movie loser with a frigid wife and slacker son (Jonah Hill) whose sole comfort is his daily conversation with a supermarket clerk (Tracy Middendorf). He lives in a shitty rundown town governed by meth dealers (Will Rothraar and Justin Long) who constantly bully him for money. Basically, his life really fucking sucks. Then one day he meets Danny DeVito, an elfin entrepreneur who's putting in a gas station and inspires Ray to change his life.

It starts out decent enough but soon hits some kind of mutated in-between of dark comedy and twee Juno-esque fluff that's pretty damn nauseating. The actors seem altogether unconvinced that this is working, so they seem to slowly slink away into the background and attempt to absolve themselves of any responsibility. Any self-respecting viewer will do the same. Sorry, Hart Bochner.
