Wholly and thoroughly badass. "Splinter" might be the perfect monster movie - scary, at times unbearably tense, and somehow utterly believable. Intense, an uneasily forged alliance among its main characters, often teeth-grittingly grisly, this is one of my most delightful finds yet. An added bonus: the acting is uniformly superb, something you don't often see in horror. And yet, the three main leads really sell everything, performing it to the hilt, never letting the intensity die down, completely selling the material. I can't say enough about this movie.

Concisely plotted indie horror about a thorny porcupine monster spreading its deadly infectious black needles and the pair of couples it terrorizes at a gas station. That one of the couples is robbing the place and fairly psychotic isn't germaine to the scary business, but it's meant, I suppose, to add intensity to an otherwise marginal idea. Horror that sticks to a simple, enclosed setting and milks it for possibilities is always a fun endeavor, and the movie doesn't lack in production value, and the cast (of whom the only familiar face is Paulo Costanzo) is passable, but you've seen this type of movie before, and there's nothing new, different, or attention-grabbing to compensate. It's okay if you're looking for something creepy, but you could easily do better.
