In terms of quality, solidity, and shortcomings, it's nearly identical to Affleck's first try, "Gone Baby Gone". Studied performances, one standout (Amy Ryan/Jeremy Renner), predictable yet somewhat involving crime tale with complex morality issues, nothing special in the end. It could easily be considered a gratuitous effort (there's literally not one unexpected moment in the whole thing, Affleck's heart of gold thief and Renner being his sadistic counterpart are such weak cliches, etc.), and frankly I'm surprised it's not by most people, but I personally like watching Affleck, Renner, and Jon Hamm in these gritty tough guy roles

Another good Boston-set crime story directed by Ben Affleck. This one's heavier on the action and less layered and surprising than Gone Baby Gone, but is still entertaining with one crackerjack heist sequence (the truck job), and a menacing, off-the-rails performance by Jeremy Renner.

It would've been hard for Affleck to top his debut unless he was working with source material as strong as Lehane's Gone Baby Gone. While an admittedly solid director, much of his work was cut out for him in the source material. Working from a novel by Chuck Hogan (perhaps best known to movie fans as the guy who co-wrote a vampire novel with Guillermo del Toro and thus occupied some of the director's precious, poorly-utilized time) that's hugely indebted to several classic crime films doesn't give Affleck much space to spread his wings. The Town basically boils down to a Boston-set reimagining of Heat: certainly a prime source to crib from but not exactly awash in originality and innovation. Far be it from me to shit on an intelligent, mature action movie, however: The Town is completely satisfying entertainment.

Generally excellent, although, as others have pointed out, it's no "Gone Baby Gone". But, whatever--Renner is a delight to behold, and Affleck's direction is so tightly-coiled that even the scenes that would prove most basic in any other heist/honor-amongst-thieves flick retain a certain pop and flash here. If Affleck's previous film was devastating in its poetry, this one is simply a sterling genre exercise. Which i'm cool with.
