Decent adaptation of a Jim Thompson novel with John Cusack as a low-level con man and the women in his life. His mother (Anjelica Huston) works the races; his girlfriend (Annette Bening) uses her slutty ways to fraud jewelers and the like. There's not much in the way of plot here in the sense that there's no 'big job' to pull off or such; it's more of a character study than anything. The actors are at the center of this film, and they (the women especially) pull it off very well. Huston is perfect as the icy Lilly, better than she's got us accustomed to, and Bening makes a great femme fatale. Cusack doesn't fare as well; although his performance is good, it lacks the edge that seems to be written into the character. This is too much like Lloyd Dobler. The supporting cast is composed of some of the best character actors of the 90's: Stephen Tobolowsky, Charles Napier, Pat Hingle, Xander Berkeley and even JT Walsh. A 'good' movie that never really rises above the level of 'good'.

An interesting look into the world of con-men/women. Personally I could have done without the whole Oedipal thing but otherwise the plot was all right. Anjelica Huston and Annette Bening's performances were intriguing enough to receive Oscar nominations.
