Strange, movies of this calibre usually turn out either turn out transcendent or catastrophic, but this is just curiously inert and nobody seemed to care about it at all when it came out (even though it was tailor-made Oscar bait and high profile in every way, I'm adding it to the OOFnet database 2 years after its release). What's the real problem here? The famed play can't be this troubled, or else who would've wanted to make a movie out of it? Maybe it's too much xeroxing - from Felllini to the stage to the screen again, it's a clone of a clone, and however long they spend polishing and glamorouzing this one, crafting an elaborate production and casting the biggest stars, in the end it's just impersonal mimicry (honestly, what does the project mean at all to director Rob Marshall, he of the equally dubious yet impeccably art designed "Chicago" and "Memoirs of a Geisha"?), which is ironically (no, not quite ironic, but tragically coincidental?) the story's protagonist's pretense as well. As a famous Italian director, Daniel Day Lewis is expected to make a big new movie, so he starts mounting a huge production but it's meaningless because he has no inspiration. Sounds exactly like the making and eventual fate of "Nine", except they actually managed to finish it with their soullessness intact without ever wising up like Guido does at the end. That's reality for ya!
Concisely: the songs and sets and actors are all proficient, convincing re-creations of the musical format, but the content itself is poisonously drab and pointless. On the screenplay level, every argument and one-liner and character detail and introspective pause and plot consequence is ancient and calculated. There's nary a witty or moving aspect to any of it. It's like the classic definition of a movie musical, but 100% synthetic and insincere.
