In which Will Ferrell, like any reputable comic actor, proves himself worthy of serious roles. Conventions notwithstanding (him forging a bond with a lonely African American boy, forging a bond with the equally damaged new lady across the street, redeeming himself altruistically by the end), it's a sweet, wistful character study, and I'm weak for these cautiously optimistic re-setting-your-life tales. With this, "Winter Passing", and "Stranger Than Fiction" under his belt, I think he's ready to work with a great director and find out if he has higher potential (while still making bizarre comedies, like the upcoming "Casa de Mi Padre" because he's still pretty good at that).

Yeah, this sort of small-scale heartwarmer is a great showcase for what a strong performer Will Ferrell can be; Ferrell goes all-in, dramatically, and plays everything as straight as he does when he's being funny. So it works, and Ferrell turns in the sort of naturalistic performance that doesn't come off as a calculated career maneuver. Plus it's got Biggie's kid, so if it's a little one-note and by-the-books at times, it's earned it.
