There's good reason to detest this movie, starting with the supremely punch-able faux-badass troublemaker sidekick played by Oliver Cooper, and the general feeling that all 3 protagonists and just about every other participant in the film is a straight out douchebag, but taken as it is, the story of high school kids trying to throw the ultimate party and losing control, this is a fairly well-made and effective picture. They may not be entirely likable and the jokes can get mean-spirited, but the kids' motives and actions are understandable and the found-footage approach enhances immediacy as intended. If you need a solid movie about under-age partying, here ya go

Never particularly witty or insightful -- in which it differs from "Superbad", the raunchy underdog comedy to which it's been compared -- "Project X" does offer the odd puerile laugh, but lackadaisical chuckles are more the order of the day. Still, it's worth seeing for a few reasons: one, like "Cloverfield" (but also totally not like "Cloverfield"), a genre is granted fresh perspective and urgency via the found-footage gimmick, and two, if you're a fan of the comedy of escalation -- wherein things get so increasingly ridiculous that you can't help but laugh in amazement -- "Project X" is damned serviceable at ramping up the action and the stakes.
