I barely even know what to write about "Rites of Spring" other than the word "useless". It's not even all that much a monster movie like I tried to categorize it for this Halloween challenge. There's some kind of inhuman boogeyman that chases some people out in the middle of nowhere, but it looks and acts like a guy wearing a cheap Halloween costume, and not even an effectively decorated one. It's just a plain disfigured mask, a dirty cloak, and a scythe. If it weren't for the relatively slick lensing, this could pass for a home movie made by some nobodies trying to emulate a slasher flick in their backyard.
On the outset it aims to blend a crime story about a motley crew of extortionists getting revenge on their boss with a spooky "Children of the Corn" or "Pumpkinhead"-esque chiller about ancient-evil-lurking-in-the-heartland, with a gratuitous, repellent dash of torture porn hysteria. But the writing is so flavorless, the direction is so dull, the style and imagination are so non-existent that while watching, I kept repeatedly wondering, "why did anyone want to make this????" I don't get it. Nothing is accomplished, there's nothing to enjoy, nobody shows any interest in elevating this beyond a quickie exercise.
The movie really doesn't deserve its title or poster - they are both evocative and alluring, qualities that are antithetical to everything the movie itself contains.
