Goddamn. This weighs on your soul. Has any other superhero film?

This should be the last X-Men movie, period, but at least I hope it's the real curtain call for Wolverine and Professor X, chronologically. There won't be a better film about them.

Minor complaints: the deranged violence does become desensitizing occasionally due to repetition and excess, but there's also an operatic effect to that which is intentionally draining to watch, so maybe this is actually a roundabout compliment. Another small nitpick: these all-powerful mutants noticeably never go for the face with each other - well, hardly ever, which is dubious since it's shown to be the only finishing move they can hope for. But okay.

Because movies nowadays all seem to be veiled remakes of previous-generation classics, I must point out that this resembles "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" on a number of levels. Not so much a complaint (what can we do about this? It's the way movies are now) as an observation. "T2" is one of the greatest action movies and franchised superhero-type epics ever made, so at least they're cloning the best.

So much about this - the extreme brutality, the haunting implied backstory that leaps us from the "X-Men" movies to this grim near-future, the relationships between the main characters, how fucking exhausted and smashed Logan looks most of the time (the makeup is incredible), the mortality of it all, Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart laying it all out in blistering performances - is what great, unforgettable films are made of. It's one that will be will be rattling in my head for a while to come.
