What a good sci-fi thriller. Sphere has an original quuality in it (even though it uses a lot of iconography taken from Kubrick's 2001) that lifts it above the common alien/suspense films. I digged the mystisicm in it and the oppressive atmosphere, but at times the plot twists were not surprising at all. Dustin Hoffman, Sharon Stone and Samuel L. Jackson made a perfect trio for the film.

Suffers from heavy editing. A lot of scene-to-scene continuity is missing, like at times you wonder how the events of the previous scene were resolved, and why everyone's back to normal as if nothing ever happened. Also, Michael Crichton wrote a fantastic novel here, the likes of which have been simplified to death. The movie's ending gives us a hint of the book's deep mystery, but for the most part it's a hack job. Sad considering both Dustin Hoffman and Samuel L. Jackson were involved
