I've been on director Joseph Kahn's side for a long time, even before I realized who he was (I didn't even comprehend that "Torque" was actually a kickass movie for many many years, only that I kept remembering it more fondly over time), and with a 20-year filmography that includes only "Torque" (b-movie galore), "Detention" (unheralded post-modern masterpiece?), and "Bodied" (ditto?), how can you not be willing and eager to pay exorbitant Fathom Event prices to go see the one-night only theatrical release of the first movie he's made in 7 years? Plus it's a zany horror comedy about creatures taking over a small town? We've hit the fuckin jackpot!
I wish. Sigh. Not sure what happened, maybe the music video directing (hundreds at this point) has taken its toll on the attention span he needs to craft a feature-length film but this is easily his weakest one of the bunch, still featuring many of his unique flourishes, compositional ingenuity (so many clever scene transitions), pop culture referencing expertise, and restless intellect (he always seems a beat ahead of every cliche), but at the same time barely held together by scotch tape in its willfully daft stupidity, overdrive editing that oftentimes leaves the jokes and flow feeling awkward, banal story, strangely unappealing characters, and unconvincing story resolution. His other films were rather messy too but the pros always far outweighed the cons; here they're neck-and-neck.
It's like an ADHD swirlie of "The Faculty", "Slither", "Night of the Creeps" and because it stars Brandon Routh in this cheeky midnight-movie mode, a little bit "Dylan Dog" too. Exceedingly, trollingly gross but that effect is dampened a bit by the dodgy CGI. An above-average movie of its type, likely to play better in casual repeat viewings as the years dwindle on, but below the standards of Mr. Kahn and will it be the early 2030s before he makes another one goddammit?
Oh and there's this side motif of using lots of early 2000s pop/punk for the soundtrack (even though it's set in present day) that should in theory be a real taint tickler for me but he never gives any track a chance to firmly land during the movie. They're each cued up for about 5 seconds and then turned down and stuffed into the background before disappearing, including a great Creed punchline at the end. Let the butt-rock behemoths and snotty three-chord gemstones sparkle, Kahn, c'mon!
