Some funny slapstick, but it starts to get boring. Thankfully it's not even 80 minutes long

The beginning of the film is a little slow, but it really picks up speed as the protagonist does. Tati plays a mailman in a French village, where the clock seems to be ticking a little slower. A fair comes to town and they show a film about American mailmen and how they have increased the speed of their deliveries. The French mailman comes to the conclusion that this must be possible here, too, and tries to make that possible. The longer the film lasts the funnier it becomes. The film has the flair of Chaplin films. It relies on slapstick and its protagonist. On the other hand some criticism cannot be missed. The only minor complaint I have is that it treats its protagonist a little bit like a moron.

This is the colour version, sadly unsubtitled, and it?s hard to guess how much is lost; I doubt many gags are. Most of them seem familiar (even if through the Simpsons or the Beatles), and the execution of all the ones Tati?s involved with is spot on. But it seems the jokes are intended to be taken one step further by their relationship with the minor characters - which is where the subtitles become important. Thus the pacing seems wrong and the voice in my head saying ?this rules? had to compete with the voice saying ?I?m tired?. So the rating probably should be higher.

Jacques Tati's debut holds a special place in my heart. It's definetly not the smoothest nor the funniest of comedies, but there is a kind of sincerity that glows through it that I've rarely seen. I've seen both the color and the black and white versions, and even though the color is good, go for the b&w.

Tati & tediously unfunny were synonymous right from the start, apparently.
