Mildly suspenseful, character-driven adult drama...that's what the movie aims to be, but I think it peters out on most counts. Maybe in 1981 this seemed sophisticated, I'm not sure, but it's a pretty plain movie. Good to have Paul Newman and Sally Field, not to mention a hall of fame list of great supporting actors around the edges (Bob Balaban, Wilford Brimely, Josef Summer, Melinda Dillon, etc.), but the web they all weave is just so...ordinary. A few choice scenes stand out for their verbal sparring, like a legal conference near the end when Brimely finally enters the picture, and Balaban, to me, is always a curious pleasure, but I could see every plot point and outcome coming a mile away. I kept expecting more interesting characterization or story variations, but it sticks quite loyally to routine.
