Obvious storytelling and flat-footed magic realism mar this otherwise fine film about a Bolshevik Colonel and his family who are snared in one of Stalin's purges. Also, this film is long-winded and meandering --I guess the directors wants us to really get a feel for the Colonel's idyllic lifestyle that is becoming gradually (far too gradually, considering how obvious the threat is) endangered.
