The building of a Jewish homeland and the struggle that entailed was a good book by Leon Uris. Unfortunately, not even Paul Newman could save this mediocre movie directed by Otto Preminger. Only the music captures the passion of a people yearning to be free.

Doesn't sound like half the people who reviewed this in OOFnet even saw the movie (Bible movie? Period piece?).
Anyway, it wasn't as boring as I feared it would be, and though it's true that it any passion present in the acting and filmmaking seems to be extraneously injected, and that the romance subplots are dead screentime, the film does shine in its social-political aspects, as an examination of limits of idealism versus pragmatism. Also, David Opatoshu gives a really nice performance as the hardline Israeli leader.
