This is a provocatively twisted soap opera-like movie about a group of circus performers, focusing mostly on the unity of the physically abnormal people (freaks) when faced with ridicule from the "normal" people. Deeply disturbing in many ways.

Want a REALLY creepy, scary movie to watch this Halloween? Rent this one. Low on blood and gore by today's standards, it still shocks. By the way, the "freaks" used in this movie are real people. That's what's so unnerving. Released in 1932, the deformities of these people are (thank God!) of a type not seen much anymore, at least not in this country. Tod Browning made some of the most disturbing horror movies of all time, more so than today's movies that only shock briefly and then are forgotten. These stay with you in your subconscious mind for probably the rest of your life.
