Lots of dark streets, sense of violence and hard boiled cops in this noir-melodrama by Nick Ray. I agree with jeff on the fact that the first half beats the shit out of the second one. Strong score by Bernard Herrman who even said that it was his best work ever - in other words better than Vertigo, Psycho, Citizen Kane or Taxi Driver. I don't quite agree with him on that one.

Nicholas Ray's sensitive film noir is at its best in the first half, when it's in the dirty rain-slicked streets of the city. The second half, out in the country, gets far too dramatic and symbolic.
