Slow and pretty boring story about a sharecropper and those living on his land in the early 1900's. Not a winning role for Richard Gere by any stretch of the imagination. Highly acclaimed film lacks anything worthwhile except for some scenes of the Texas landscape.

It's a Malick classic, but there's a pretty vast disconnect between the material and the visuals; it's positively gorgeous, like visual poetry unfolding before you in a wordless document of American history. Certain scenes are utterly arresting: Richard Gere and Sam Shepard encountering each other on a burning plane, bodies silhouetted against the backdrop of nightfall .. and, then, there's the actual material, and there's simply no reason to actually be emotionally invested in our characters. The story is a chore; the aesthetic arresting. Therefore, I guess "Days of Heaven" falls somewhere in the middle, although i feel like i'm committing one of film criticism's seven deadly sins by not fawning all over it.
