Watching the four-hour version of Greed is like watching a mad epic frequently interrupted by slide-shows. It's frustrating, and while I eventually grew accustomed to it, I'm skeptical as to whether it's an improvement over the butchered two-and-a-half hour version. More story isn't what makes Greed, it's von Stroheim's vision --his painstaking attention to detail and realism, his expansive pacing, his use of locations, and above all, his unwavering sense of purpose.
