This film is really a great fun, although it runs a little bit out of steam in the second half. The dialogue, full of all those completely unrealistic one-liners, is really, really great. Even when it’s bad or odd, when the characters utter all those lines you really can’t say in movies, e.g. a voiceover like "When I arrived, I realized that dive smelled like trouble", it’s great fun. This film has to be recommended to all the newbies to the genre like myself. The tempo of the film is enormous and the plot is quite complicated. Despite all ist undeniable flaws I really dug this film.

Edward Dmytryk's Chandler adaptation is one of the essential noirs and the first of the great Marlowe films.
This film is full of expressionistic light and shadows. The dream/drug scenes are groundbreaking. Not sure about Dick Powell, though.
Also known as Farewell, My Lovely.
