Jeff's got the right idea here - really, Argento's film has little more going for it than that delightfully kooky Goblin score and some deft camerawork, but each little idiosyncratic piece goes a long way towards solidifying the film's spooky, nervy atmosphere. Also, I liked this a lot more than "Suspiria" - that film had atmosphere to spare, but nothing resembling a coherent plot or any legitimate stakes, but "Deep Red" is tightly plotted and legitimately mysterious. That it's all dashed by the final reveal is immaterial - for 100 minutes or so, "Deep Red" is suspenseful, unsettling, gloriously visual, and unnerving.
