One of John Ford's final masterpieces and one of the most important westerns of the 60's. Ford tells about the conflict between traditional and modern - between old and new. What happens when civilization comes to the old west?
Ford abandons the philosophical (The Searchers) and the romantisized (Quiet Man) elements of his vision and concentrates on political and social matters. The result is idealistic but still sometimes rather bleak and bitter.
Both Jimmy Stewart and John Wayne are terrific.
