Nice little nostalgia trip but an extremely trivial one. All these Josef von Sternberg & Marlene Dietrich cult-films seem to be quite overrated - at least I can't find anything special from the ones I've seen. For a good train film you should check out the original The Narrow Margin (1952) by Richard Fleischer.

Josef Von Sternberg was a rarity in Hollywood --a visual poet. Where most directors in the 30s shaped lively films from clever scripts, Von Sternberg's scripts seemed to be an afterthought. More important to him was creating an emotional terrain, an entirely fabricated universe, for his star, Marlene Dietrich. No actress has ever been photographed as consistently beautifully as Dietrich in her series of films with Von Sternberg. The end result is that Shanghai Express is more about the potency of the sexual image than lasting love.
