A decent example of the contemporary hype in horror moviemaking. The story is, effectively, rooted in the supernatural, which makes it interesting as well as confusing. The cast is truly great and the cinematography deserves to be applauded. But I can't help wondering what the film could have been like without all that taped-sessions nonsense and focusing more on the interesting character developments hinted at in this movie.

Not nearly as unsettling as its reputation would have you believe, but it is a moderately intriguing little spook-tale. The cast is pretty good (especially Peter Mullan), the proceedings refreshingly free of fake scares and bombast, and there are some actual creepy bits (like the session tapes, the ending, or when Josh Lucas sees a figure in the darkness). Ultimately it plays out more like a tragedy spiced up with chills just to drive home its dark subject matter, and that angle could work towards an exceptional film, but this one plays it relatively too low-key to leave much of an impact. Plus some of its underlying mystery is hard to account for - like, why was Josh Lucas reduced to a mumbling cipher? If he was physically attacked, how did he survive so long? And could a mere human assault leave someone in such a state of shock? It's meant to imply supernatural elements, perhaps, and that's cheating since the movie otherwise denies that kind of stuff.

This movie was alright, I guess. Decent acting (Brendan Sexton sure is a spazz though), great use of the location, lighting and sound. I didn't find the story all that interesting. However, it is nice that the story can be understood without having to involve the supernatural, which is something of a rarity for a horror/suspense film these days. I didn't think the interview sessions tied in very well with the modern-day action (other than to pump up the atmosphere), which made the final line in the movie kind of stupid.
