Short and sweet, funny and insightful, cartoonish yet startlingly adept, "Undercover Brother," despite how obviously it cops from the Austin Powers franchise, carves its own little niche by transcending its obvious spoof nature and including some pretty on-point satire. Which isn't to say that this is some razor-sharp, mean satire that skewers everything in its range of fire. It IS sharp, and it DOES satirize often, but the satire isn't lofty-- even if you miss the satire entirely, you're still liable to be happily entertained by all the goofy action and comic rapport. Besides, "Undercover Brother" is an equal-opportunity satire: while one might assume that it'd either be an attack on the stuffy, patronizing white race or a trumpeting of black stereotypes, it's really not either. It deals with all facets of black and white. Key character: The Man. Here, The Man, generally a sweeping term for oppressive, high-power caucasians, is personified by an actual Man. This serves as a playful ribbing of black conspiracy theorists and a representation of oppressive high-power caucasians both. Besides all the cool satire and tooling with of stereotypes, I guess I just thought the movie was really cool. Eddie Griffin's mammoth afro and pork-chop sideburns, the outrageous fight scenes (especially Undercover Brother and Mr. Feather's set to "Beat It"), and especially the groovy funk and 70s soul soundtrack. I dunno. Maybe I'm overrating it but dozens of rewatches later, "Undercover Brother" hasn't lost it's appeal.
