There's a certain poetry to wistful movies like this that are in love with food - "Ratatouille", "Julie & Julia" and the like come to mind - and that can carry a film a long way. "Big Night" succeeds in this regard - Stanley Tucci and Tony Shalhoub are excellent performers, and convincing as squabbling immigrant brothers - and it shines through absolutely. The drama isn't as satisfying as the food, mind you - there are one too many spurned-lover subplots that don't actually go anywhere interesting - but the relationship between Tucci and Shalhoub is believable, kind of touching really, and the scenes of them just working in their restaurant pop with authenticity and genuine affection.
