Hard to concentrate on what's actually happening onscreen when hypnotized by Ophuls' sensuous style and the ornate set design. It would be a fully intoxicating film if not for Anton Walbrook's frequent intercessions which provide a distancing effect.

Interesting, stylish tale of people who cheat on each other and eventually come full circle. The film is narrated by Anton Walbrook's master of ceremonies who introduces each segment. The problem is, these segments are wildly uneven. They are consistently well-acted, but some are so sluggish and devoid of interest that they lessen your interest in the film somewhat. The cast is superb, containing (among others) Simone Signoret, Daniel Gélin, Danielle Darrieux, Serge Regianni, Simone Simon and Gérard Philipe. A stylish, funny and thought-provoking film that's brought down by its infrequent but heavy lulls.
